Allan "Jay" Fox, IV

Located in in the City of Jersey Village EL29fv, (Houston, Texas) I received my Novice call KB5CVX in 1987.  With a Swan 350 connected to an old piece of Romax wire in the attic to form a dipole I began  chasing DX.  However it was not long before I upgraded to Technician and became N5LKJ.

Now that I had VHF and UHF privileges I bought my second radio a Kenwood Model TR-751A,  All Mode 2 meter transceiver.  After taking some old coat hangers and forming them into a ground plane antenna that I also placed in our attic I was now on 2 meters.

Following in the footsteps of my Mentor WB5JRD I became interested in Amateur Satellites.  Acquiring a Ten Tec Model 2510 Mode B transverter  my plans were to use the old Swan and get on AO-10.   However I was going to need a power amp, preamp and an elaborate set of satellite antennas before this could be accomplished.  However while this was put on hold awaiting money I discovered the Russian Satellite RS-10/11, could be worked with my existing station.  This bird had a 2 meter SSB uplink and a 10 meter downlink.

It was not long before I moved the TR-751A  to my pick-up and purchased a Uniden 2510, (10 meter rig) to accompany it, thus having a great mobile station capable of working RS-10/11.  Discovering that the MIR the Russian Space Station was on 2 meters brought on even more interest it space.  On many occasions I worked cosmonauts Musa Manarov U2MIR and Aleksandr Volkov U4MIR aboard MIR, the Russian Space Station.  Then while giving a presentation at W5MIR, the Russian Space Exhibit in Ft. Worth, TX I explained my technique for knowing when I could contact MIR.  It is really very simple, I take my Icom 2GAT HT set to the MIR operating frequency.  Turning the volume up I set the HT on the lectern in front of me.  Then As I proceeded with my presentation on mobile RS-10/11 the squelch broke and there was U5MIR calling CQ.  To everyone's disbelief I picked up my HT and made the contact.

In 1992 after retiring my 8 year old daughter Megan and I had a 1991 Ford van converted to what we considered our ultimate touring HAM radio station.  Since Megan had just recently gotten her ticket and was KB5WBX. we set off on the adventure of a lifetime.  I retired to the Eastern Shore of Maryland  with my daughter Megan, KB5WBX.

I now live in Royal Oak, MD (FM18vr).  My interests outside of amateur radio include cooking, motorcycles and traveling
